Carney deserves great credit for the movie's clever, layered structure, and for resisting a few obvious plot turns along the way. Lightning doesn't strike, but sunshine works, too.. It all pays off in the second half, as the characters are fleshed out in ways that didn't at first seem possible. The actors go beyond playing types and enter the world of three-dimensional people.. "Begin Again" feels more like a glorified retread of "Once" than something freshly imagined.. DiCaprio is terrific, but...
